ABC Peel Youth Event - Saturday, January 15th & 22nd, 2011

Improv Theatre Workshop

Being able to use your voice and words with confidence is an important skill; add humour to the mix and you have a strong and confident student who can not only share knowledge, but laughter too.

During this two-day workshop participants will learn the fundamentals of storytelling, create their own on stage characters and gain the self-confidence to use their newfound talents. Exercises are designed to build spontaneity, teamwork and storytelling skills.

Price includes one ticket to the Bad Dog Theatre Co. performance of Globehead 2011 on, Saturday, January 29th at 8:00pm in Toronto.

Date: Saturday, January 15th & 22nd, 2011

ABC Peel Family Program - Saturday, June 12th, 2010

A Coach Tour to Fort Erie and

the Re-enactment of the Fenian Raid

We’ll travel back in time to discover how Canada became Canada. Learn more about the life and times of the 1860s through living history. Cheer on your heroes at the re-enactment of the notorious Ridgeway Battle.

And for those who dare not witness the heat of battle, there are the officer’s quarters, soldier’s barracks, kitchen, artifacts, costumes and merchants.

  • Enjoy Luxury Motor Coach transportation from Mississauga to Fort Erie.
  • Witness Fenian Raid: a re-enactment of the Ridgeway battle of June 2, 1866, between Canadian militia and the Fenian Brotherhood's force of US Civil War veterans
  • Visit the Underground railroad terminal: the Canadian arrival place for those fleeing slavery on the border at Bertie Hall in Erie, now the Doll’s House Building
  • Tour Fort Erie: one of the networks of forts built after all of New France had been ceded to Britain

Please note, lunch is not included. Bring your own picnic lunch or there is a food kiosk at the displays and demos at Fort Erie Tour site.

This is a family event. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult over 18.

Lasers & Mazes

This promises to be a one-of-a-kind exciting, fun-filled opportunity that will introduce you to the fascinating world of laser beams and mazes with an informative, interactive and entertaining unique experience. It consists of hands-on experience, live demonstrations, two games of Laser Quest and an entertaining video presentation.

Date: Tuesday May 4th, 2010 

Time: 6:20 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.  

Ages: 10 to 15

Event of Interest - Saturday April 4th, 2010

FIRST ROBOTICS Competition

The Greater Toronto Area is home to the largest Canadian regional FRC event. This marquee event attracts elite teams from the area and beyond. The level of play speaks for itself: the Greater Toronto Regional pit Canada's best robots under one roof. With 56 teams competing for the GTR championship title, additional space had to be setup in the Hershey Centre's adjacent practice arena. Here teams will setup their "pits" just like in NASCAR, where they will frenetically repair, and improve on their robots in between matches. The best part - the "pits" are open to the public to experience behind-the-scenes what it takes to produce a world-class robot.

Admission is free. Parking is free. Protective eyewear is available for loan in the pits.

Temple Tour, Museum & Family Game Day 

Visit the beautiful new Temple with a guided tour. Enjoy the museum and experience Hindu culture. The Temple, thanks to the Yadav family, are graciously hosting our Family Game Day after the tour, so please bring along your favourite board game for an afternoon of culture, spirituality, and family fun !

NEURON TICKLER WORKSHOP

ABC Peel is happy to present a math "Neuron Tickler" - a fun and challenging workshop for Grade 4, 5 and 6 students who are eager and excited about Math! 

Are you ready to have your neurons tickled by challenging math problems? If so, this 3-hour workshop by the Spirit of Math Schools is just the thing to get your brain back into gear after the holidays. Students in Grades 4, 5, and 6 will enjoy this exciting opportunity to work with others, while doing a variety of math problems.

Individual and group discovery will be accompanied by some instruction on how to solve certain types of problems.  The workshop will end with a fun math rally. This workshop will be lead by Kim Langen, President of Spirit of Math, with assistance from teachers from the Spirit of Math campuses.  

Note: this is a special event for ABC Peel by Spirit of Math.  Registration is limited, so be sure to contact us as soon as possible to ensure placement in this 3-hour workshop session.

Are you interested in Cognative Science and Artificial Intelligence?

Thursday February 22, 2007 - Cognitive Science and Artificial Intelligence Program at U of T. 

Professor John Vervaeke will be joining us along with 2 senior students to discuss this fascinating interdisciplinary program that combines studies in cognitive psychology, philosophy, linguistics and computer science (artificial intelligence). Prof. Vervaeke was nominated in 2006 for TVO's Best Lecturer Challenge in Ontario, and received one of the five teaching awards at UofT in 2000/2001. 

Children in grades 7 and up are welcome.

This meeting will be held in conjunction with the Toronto ABC chapter.

Place :   The Mississauga Room at the Peel District School Board building at 5650 Hurontario St. in Mississauga.   For a map click here

WHAT KINDNESS MEANS TO ME?

   An essay and poster contest for Grade 7 and 8 students.

Are you creative, do you enjoy writing or drawing? If so this contest is for you!

ESSAY: Students may submit and original essay in English or French with the title:

 What Kindness Means to Me. 

POSTER: Students May Submit a Poster, using any medium, with a theme of kindness and compassion for living creatures. 

PRIZES: For each category. 

  • Top Prize $300 
  • Five Runner-Up prizes of $100 
  • Five Honourable mentions of $50 

CONTEST RULES

  1. Students must be in Grade 7 or 8. 
  2. All entries must be original. 
  3. Student's name, age and grade, teacher's name and the name and address of school must be on each entry. 
  4. All entries become the property of the sponsor and may be reproduced. 
  5. The decisions of the judges are final. 
  6. Essays must be no more than 350 words, types and double spaced. 
  7. Posters must be no more than 12 x 18 inches or 30 by 45 cm. Please roll posters for mailing. 
  8. First round judging will be done by the visiting teachers of the Kindness Program. 
  9. Final Judging will be done by the Directors of the Beatrice Watson-Acheson Foundation.

Ontario Science Centre Science School

Spend a semester at theOntario Science Centre Science School and earn Grade 12 University Preparation science credits! 

The Ontario Science Centre Science School presents students with an opportunity to gain University Preparation science credits during an enriched semester at the Ontario Science Centre. Students acquire a solid academic background in classes that are small and informal with experienced, enthusiastic and imaginative teachers in a unique and challenging environment. 

The Science School seeks students with a passion for learning and communicating science who have a solid academic background, demonstrated initiative, independent-study skills and the ability to work as part of a team. 

No tuition fees are required as the program is generously supported by the Toronto District and Toronto Catholic District School Boards.

Spirit of Math is an after school 'school' for highly motivated children who want more of a challenge than what their day school provides using a curriculum that produces leaders in our global environment. Peel Summer Academy

Peel Summer Academy is a unique residential program for intellectually gifted students. It is offered by the Centre for Education and Training, Peel District School Board.

The program provides intellectual stimulation, a variety of recreational and social activities, and an opportunity to live away from home, in a well-supervised context, with a wonderful group of peers who share the same intellectual gifts.
2006 will be their 22nd year! Detail on each of the four programs being offered in 2006 can be found under the individual program tabs at The Centre for Education and Training.

To be eligible for Peel Summer Academy students must currently be in grades 4 to 10 and be formally identified as Intellectually Gifted. Students participate in the program for the grade they are attending in the 2005/2006 school year. Parents of a child who has not been formally identified may submit, for consideration, a letter of reference from the school principal with a copy of the most recent report card.
